The best times of year to buy
Retail runs on seasons, and those seasons are more predictable than they feel. Inventory arrives, sits, and eventually has to move, which means most categories have a stretch of the year where the pressure to discount is highest. You do not need a spreadsheet to use this — a rough sense of the rhythm is enough.
Travel tends to reward flexibility more than timing tricks. The quiet weeks between major holidays, and the shoulder seasons on either side of a destination's peak, are where fares and room rates relax. Midweek departures usually cost less than weekend ones, and a single day of flexibility often does more than any amount of refreshing.
Big-ticket goods follow product cycles instead. Electronics soften when a successor is announced, and home furniture moves on floor-plan changes and end-of-season clearances. Winter clothing gets cheapest when nobody wants to think about winter, which is exactly when it is worth buying for next year.
The practical takeaway is not to memorize a calendar, but to decouple deciding from buying. Choose what you want now, then let the season come to you. Members tell us this single change — writing the list first and waiting for the alert second — is what actually moves their yearly spending.
